Main Purpose of Role
·To manage all aspects of the team, quality and on time delivery of results for samples received within the department in accordance with the quality management system and with due regard to control of costs, Quality, Health, Safety and Environment.
·To effectively handle employee issues, provide staff with technical assistance and training as necessary to support the Laboratory Manager in promoting continuous improvement, with the overall purpose of delivering customer excellence
·To support/deputise for the Laboratory Manager as and when required to ensure continuity of service levels and quality at all times.
Review workload with respect to analytical test deadlines and use this information to prioritise activities of team, ensuring all samples are processed for analysis and reports of analysis are issued within turnaround times agreed with both our internal and external Customers.
·Support people management of the team including recruitment and selection activiites, absence management and performance management to appraisal, coach and develop direct reports, ensuring each individual has a set of objectives.
·Ensure effective teamwork between Laboratory teams to deliver an effective service to the customer.
·Regularly liaise with Laboratory Manager to keep appraised of workload priorities, issues or other factors which may impact upon performance.
·Regularly liaise with customers to keep them informed of analytical test issues such as delays, and respond to queries effectively and efficiently.
·Maintain effective two-way communication to achieve appropriate levels of understanding of, and commitment to, appropriate business objectives.
·Ensure all employees have the appropriate level of skills, knowledge and experience in order to provide a high quality service to customers, including maintaining up to date Training Records /Training Matrix to ensure competency levels within the team
·Ensure that all checks are performed before work commences and maintenance/repairs are completed in a timely and successful manner to maintain a quality service.
·Promote and develop a commitment to continuous improvement in all areas of the laboratories through adherence with SGS’s quality systems, following up audits and CAPRs/NIRs by completing actions on time.
·At all times, adopt a safe behaviour by exercising due regard for the health and safety of yourself, colleagues and clients, in line with the Company’s HSE policies and procedures.
·Ensure full compliance with the Company’s Code of Integrity & Professional Conduct, and at all times adopt behaviour in accordance with SGS UK’s Equality & Diversity Policy.
Skills & Knowledge
·In-depth technical knowledge of analytical testing activities within the petro-chemical industry.
·Good communication skills – both verbal and written.
·Able to adopt a flexible approach to work and react effectively to a rapidly changing environment with conflicting priorities
·Working knowledge of effective people management techniques.
·Able to work under own initiative and with a high degree of autonomy & maturity.
·Working knowledge of CCLAS LIMS.
Sound working knowledge of the prevailing business activities.
Knowledge of IT systems, particularly MS Office applications.
