Senior Quantity Surveyor

The company have secured a place on Lot 1 of the Governments MMC1
Education Framework to deliver new build education schemes > 6,000m2
on a design and build basis. We have already secured two new Secondary
School projects (totalling £40m) with a healthy pipeline of further education
projects to follow (totalling £70m+).
The company act as both Principal Designer and Principal Contractor on
these schemes, responsible for developing the design to draft Contractors
Proposals ("CPs") / Gateway 2 sign-off and the submission of a planning
application, and then further developing the design to final CPs and the
execution of a [JCT D&B] building contract upon receiving planning
consent. All work up to the execution of a building contract is undertaken
under a Pre-Construction Services Agreement ("PCSA").
RESPONSIBILITIES, DUTIES, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
The company is recruiting a Senior Quantity Surveyor to be based at our
factory and head office in Newark, but the successful candidate will need to
visit site as and when required.
The successful candidate will be required to work alongside the project
Design Manager, operational lead and consultant design team to develop
and agree affordable Contractors Proposals and robust contract sums for
two new-build Secondary Schools. The candidate will then be required to
manage the manufacture and delivery phase of at least one of these two
The Senior Quantity Surveyor will be reporting to the Commercial Manager
and will carry out the duties and responsibilities as described further below.
„h The candidate will be qualified to Degree/HND or HNC in Quantity
Surveying or a similar commercial degree in construction. RICS
membership preferred but not mandatory.
„h A full valid driving licence.
„h Will need to be CSCS qualified.
„h The candidate will need to demonstrate an appropriate level of
experience in the construction industry as a Senior Quantity Surveyor,
or in a similar Senior Quantity Surveyor / Managing / Commercial
Manager role for a large main contractor.
„h The candidate should also have experience of managing preconstruction
activity and working alongside the project operational lead
and project Design Manager to ensure that a cost effective, robust,
and compliant set of Contractors Proposals is put together. The
candidate should also have the experience of being able to cost plan
and offer cost advice as the design develops, and put together a wellstructured,
compliant and robust contract sum.
„h The candidate should be process driven but flexible in their approach.
The candidate will need to following attributes and qualifications as a
„h Effectively communicate with the Commercial Manager on a daily
basis advising of any issues that may affect the cost, value or margin
of the projects.
„h Be able to communicate Contract/Sub-Contract advice to site based
„h Placement of subcontract orders to step down contractual terms and
manage risk, including placement of ITTs and ensuring notices and
payment are made on time.
„h Keeping accurate relevant records.
„h Ensure subcontract accounts are managed within budgets and
subcontracts/final accounts are signed and agreed in a timely manner.
„h Collate commercial information for drafting Cost Value Reconciliations
on a monthly basis to deadlines.
„h Dealing with Subcontract disputes and ensuring payment notices are
in place and in line with current legislation.
„h Timely and properly recorded Applications to Clients.
„h Producing Project Variations including tracking documents and
assessment of value taken to monthly Cost Value Reconciliation
„h Final Accounts assessment of and timely submission of final
accounts giving regular updates to the client to ensure expectations
„h Advise on and mitigate the effects of disputes – Recognise potential
contractual issues on site and make good records including
photographs and written statements to protect the companies interests.
„h A good knowledge of construction methods and materials.
„h Budget handling skills.
„h Excellent IT and maths skills.
„h A methodical approach to work.
„h Good organisational skills.
„h A good understanding of building contracts terms and conditions, and
their legal and operational mechanisms.
„h Excellent communication and negotiating skills.
„h The ability to work as part of a team.
„h Excellent understanding a good experience of turnkey construction
