The Lead Biological Safety Specialist role:
The Lead Biological Safety Specialist is a specialist adviser on matters relating to safe handling of biological materials.
This role will manage the operation of the Containment 2, 3 and 4 facilities and advise and oversee Crick compliance in relation to biological risks. It will also provide support to the Director of SHS and other areas of the SHS team’s remit.
This is a post within the Safety, Health and Sustainability (SHS) team at the Crick Institute.
Responsibilities of our Lead Biological Safety Specialist will include:
Operational management of Containment level 3 & 4
Oversight of primary and secondary Containment level 2 areas
Supervise the safe fumigation of Containment equipment and facilities
Liaison with Regulators, participation in Regulatory intervention visits and managing the implementation of subsequent follow up actions.
Act as licence holder for work under the Specified Animal Pathogens Order (SAPO).
Line managing the Biological Safety Manager and Biological/ Radiation Technician.
Developing, writing, reviewing and updating Policy, Code of Practice and Standard Operating Procedure /guidance documents.
Design and Deliver Safety inductions (staff/contractors and other visitors).
Active promotion of a positive health and safety culture within the Crick.
Providing specific biological training (to in house staff/FM staff and visiting workers).
Skills and experience we are looking for in our Lead Biological Safety Specialist:
Degree in a life science or related discipline (or equivalent)
Considerable relevant occupational and practical experience, ideally in the application or management of biological safety, within a biological sciences research environment.
Technical understanding of general Health and Safety requirements for working with biological agents, including containment levels and application of controls.
Excellent communication skills to be able to deliver specialist information.
Experience of reviewing of biological risk assessments
Practical experience in the design/refurbishment of containment level 3 laboratories, including compliance to SAPO and ATCSA containment requirements.
Familiarity with using and assisting with developing, computer-based record keeping systems
Willingness to work outside their specialisation.
