Handy Person – Liverpool Central   Rate of Pay £10.08 per hour   Hours – 25-42.5

Handy Person skills and experience:

The role of the Handy Person will cover our two hostels in Liverpool, YHA Liverpool Central and YHA Liverpool Albert Docks.  YHA Liverpool Albert Dock consists of 32 bedrooms and YHA Liverpool Central consists of 46 bedrooms.

Experience of painting and decorating is a requirement to fulfil the role of Handy Person.

The successful candidate will ideally have the following skills and/or experience:

City and Guilds NVQ2 in Maintenance Operations or equivalent (desirable)

Proven experience of repair and maintenance duties and tasks

Experience of completing risk assessments to ensure maintenance tasks are undertaken safely

Experienced in the use of hardware tools (hand and power tools)

Basic understanding of electrical safety and plumbing

Competent decorating skills

Ability to work as part of a team

Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to read and understand instructions

Good attention to detail

Strong time management skills

Well organised, with the ability to solve problems

Ability to adhere to health and safety guidelines

Knowledge and understanding of the core purpose of YHA (desirable)

Proficient in basic IT skills

Excellent communication* skills are required to ensure information is conveyed clearly, accurately, and convincingly.  A keen ear to listen to and understand the needs of others would be an advantage.

Handy Person role responsibilities:

As Handy Person you’ll work with your Hostel Manager(s) to devise a scheduled improvement plan with particular focus on bedroom standards.  You’ll undertake minor repair and maintenance works as directed by your Hostel Manager, which may include: –

Painting and decorating to the agreed standards and specification

Joinery

Plumbing, e.g., unblocking toilets, washbasins, showers etc

Maintenance of bathroom fittings, e.g., sealant repair, re-grouting etc

Changing light bulbs, fuses etc

You’ll detect and diagnose first-line building faults and failures, actioning repairs, using Access Maintain our computer-aided facilities management tool, enabling the management of emergency, planned and reactive maintenance. 

You’ll monitor stock levels of common spare items, e.g., light bulbs, fuel etc, replenishing as required.

You’ll monitor heating plant and equipment to ensure it is operating efficiently and effectively and arrange for qualified contractor support to progress any repairs required.

You’ll attend all the FM six monthly maintenance meetings as directed.

You will be responsible for painting and decorating bedrooms and public areas throughout both Liverpool properties.

Our handy person is responsible for mixing paints, matching colours, preparing surfaces, and applying paint to these surfaces. You will perform touch-ups regularly or coordinate large painting projects related to the specific hostel requirements.

You’ll provide support to external contractors where required and co-ordinate larger cyclical maintenance in conjunction with our central property team and the hostel manager.
