The Controls System Manager is responsible for the Electrical, Automation, and Industrial Network Systems in our Production and Warehousing facilities. You will be tasked with maintaining our Production and Warehousing Facilities within the scope of these responsible areas, and for supporting and implementing improvement projects as appropriate The role is to make sure that these systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently and safely As the Controls/PLC Engineer you will be our front-line support with any controls system related issues. Using your expert technical knowledge and people skills to coach the Engineering team and improve their diagnostic skills to identify controls issues.

Scope / Dimensions of Role

• Provide support to Electrical Maintenance Engineers and supporting breakdown resolution and remediation as required, as well as assisting in delivering Site Efficiency Targets.

• Be able to troubleshoot faulty code and identify external faults through software

• A good ability to perform modifications and upgrades, and ability to manage and oversee external specialists performing advanced changes

• Performing ad-hoc backups of all automation systems as required and monitoring and maintaining automated backup systems

• Support resolving network problems on machine level networks with IT Dept/Suppliers

• Installing and maintaining new systems as delivered to required standards

• Technical expertise and ability to work with and guide others on related topics

• Firewall rules and setup. This includes identifying firewall rule changes and completing requests for changes by our Internal & third parties

• Ability to communicate at all levels with onsite personnel and as such should have good communication skills

• Ability to identify non-compliances/risk areas in the existing installation base with a view to plan future improvement work

• Be able to identify requests which would conflict with safety requirements and be able to explain their reasons for not proceeding with requesting activities in an inclusive and profession manner

• Provide guidance and expertise to Project and Engineering teams

• Develop documented training material and roll out for Maintenance Engineers Key Accountabilities • Assisting the maintenance department to locate issues and so limit downtime

• Managing the operation and upgrading of PLCs to give the required reliability levels

• Integrating new modules into the existing control systems to avoid obsolescence issues

• Assisting with in root cause analysis (RCA) studies and follow up actions

• Implementing the control schemes associated with capital projects

• Implementing continuous improvement initiatives

Key Skills

• Good working knowledge of Electrical Engineering & Systems

• Automation and Process Control Systems including Drives, Servo and AC drive/motors

• Strong understanding of PLC systems, primarily Siemens based (S7) & Allen Bradley

• Automation systems include Robots – Fanuc, Safety PLCs, HMI’s, Print and apply systems

• Industrial Networking

• Familiar with LV electrical, automation, networking, cyber security and machinery safety

• Experience of DCS & SCADA systems

• Experience of Capital Projects involving control or automation

• Knowledge of Functional Safety standards such as BS EN 61511

• Experience of carrying maintenance strategies for Control Systems Key Attributes

• Sound analytical skills, good problem solver

• Good communication skills both verbal and written and good interpersonal skills, able to analyze and pass on knowledge

• Good organizational ability, able to priorities

• Ability to read and understand safety information, technical manuals and data, and communicate clearly with colleagues to enable a safe environment

• Adaptable and flexible approach

• Able to use own initiative and work to tight deadlines

• Excellent problem solving and communication skills

• Self-motivated, consistent and able to work at pace Qualifications / Experience

• Excellent working knowledge of Control Systems

• Apprentice trained Electrical Engineer

• Completed City & Guilds, NVQ, and/or BTEC ONC, HNC, HND in electrical engineering

• Have at least five years' experience in Controls Systems Engineering

• Ideally Food manufacturing/Packaging environment, FMCG considered

• Experienced in Siemens and Rockwell Automation equipment

• Online code monitoring / modification / development with Siemens & Allen Bradley PLCs

• A good understanding of PLC control system architecture and field control devices

• Experience in Warehousing / distribution / logistics / Process/Production lines

• Working with Process, Packaging machines, Conveyors and pallet conveyors

• Experience with Robotics would be an advantage

• Computer literate in MS office package, ability to use a CMMS system
